Michael Ivshin Johansen is a Danish photographer working with themes of distance, atmosphere, and perception. His practice is driven by a long-standing curiosity for unfamiliar environments—from remote landscapes to transient conditions of light and weather. Through photography, he explores the fragile boundary between presence and absence, where places feel both tangible and elusive. Working primarily in northern and isolated regions, his images are not intended as documentation, but as studies of how we experience space, time, and silence. His work unfolds in series, each reflecting an ongoing engagement with specific geographies and conditions. All prints are produced as archival pigment prints on fine art paper, released in limited editions and signed by the artist.

"A wash of color and vibrancy attracts the viewer to this spectacular nightscape. The natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis never ceases to engage and evoke wonder and appreciation for those lucky enough to witness it in person – for the rest of us, striking and uncomplicated images like this must suffice. An impressive occurrence on our planet, enchanting and exciting. – LIFE FRAMER"

I’m proud to be part of 1x.com — one of the world’s most exclusive curated photography galleries. On 1x, I not only have the honor of having my own work curated, but I also contribute by curating the work of other talented photographers. You can view my curated and published work below, or visit my profile directly at 1x.com/michaeljohansen.
What does “Published” mean on 1x? A photo marked as published has been approved by a team of curators and expert curators, and is featured both on your personal profile and in the "Latest Published" section on the front page. This means every photo shown on 1x has passed through a strict curation process, significantly raising the overall quality compared to earlier versions of the site, where profile photos were not curated.

What does "awarded" mean?
An awarded photo has been handpicked by 1x’s official head curators and receives the highest level of recognition on the platform. Awarded photos are prominently displayed on the 1x front page and can be found under both "Popular" and "Latest Awarded" in the drop-down menu. Typically, it takes about 1–2 weeks after a photo is published for it to be considered for an award. If a photo has not been awarded within that timeframe, it means it will not receive this distinction.
